Some Symptoms of Groupthink

• Self-censorship and the illusion of unanimity—Group members avoid speaking up against the majority for fear of being ridiculed or because they “do not want to waste the group’s time.” No one wants to be the first to speak against the dominant position. Because no one hears any dissent, each doubter assumes that he or she is the only one.

• Pressure on dissenters—Those who insist on dissenting are branded as a nuisance or “naysayers”; their loyalty is questioned. Exhortations to “pull our oars in the same direction,” “line up our arrows,” or “all work together on this” can deter those with minority views from raising their concerns.

• Illusion of invulnerability—A successful track record or the qualifications of group members lead people to assume that luck is “on our side” or “we can’t lose.”

• Stereotypes—Outsiders, such as competitors, are cast as less ethical, intelligent, farsighted, or committed to the public good. In contrast, the intelligence, commitment, and vision of team members are highlighted.
